Irene's Prosthesis Story

Irene’s story is one of resilience, adaptation, and rediscovering life in new ways.

Before her illness, Irene worked as a beautician in Singapore. She shared that she used to be more of a stay-at-home person and rarely went out or tried many activities. In 2023, everything changed suddenly when she was hospitalized with abdominal pain and a high fever. Her condition worsened rapidly, and the treatment needed to sustain her life led to tissue loss in her hands and feet, resulting in the amputation of all four limbs. It was an extremely difficult period, but with the support of her family and those around her, Irene gradually learned to accept her reality and move forward step by step.

Today, Irene uses below-knee prosthetic legs and a bionic hand, with plans for a second bionic hand soon. Her prostheses are customized to her needs, helping her regain mobility and independence in daily life. She also expresses her heartfelt gratitude to Lions Prostheses Centre (LPC) and The Prosthetic Company (TPC) for supporting her journey and sponsoring her prosthetic leg and prosthetic arm.

Since her amputation, Irene has surprised herself by becoming more active than ever before, trying new experiences and taking part in adaptive sports since last year. This year, she also started a new job, marking another meaningful milestone in her journey. Her message to someone newly amputated is simple and heartfelt: it is normal to feel scared and confused at first. Give yourself time, take it step by step, and you can still find your way, and your inner strength.
